The Driskill
Built by Colonel Jesse Driskill in 1886, the iconic Driskill Hotel’s timeless elegance and luxurious amenities make it a home away from home for many important figures in American history, including senators, presidents, and captains. But beyond the grandeur and gilded opulence, whispers of ghostly encounters and eerie occurrences have cemented its reputation as one of the most haunted places in Austin.
Texas Capitol Building
The Texas Capitol Building may be grand and fancy, but it's seen its fair share of fiery destruction and fatal falls that have seen it rise from the ashes twice. Today, it stands as a symbol of Texas pride, political power, and the haunting legacy of Austin's dark past, attracting history buffs and thrill seekers from all over the world looking to explore its majestic architecture and uncover the sinister secrets that lie within its walls.
Omni Hotel
With a 19-story atrium and stunning downtown views, the stunning Omni Hotel is the perfect spot for business travelers and ghost hunters looking to uncover the secrets of its haunted past. Local lore says a down-on-his-luck businessman haunts the halls after he tragically leaped to death in this building, leaving guests with spine-tingling tales of unexplained touches and eerie encounters.
Long before Austin became the hip and happening metropolis we know today, it was a wild frontier town steeped in dark history, from the Mexican invasion in 1842 to ancient tribal wars and bloody skirmishes between settlers and notorious outlaws. Before the arrival of the European settlers, the never-ending skirmishes between the Tonkawa tribe and raiding Comanches and Apaches left the entire area desolate and soaked with native blood, setting the stage for the mayhem that would follow.
As settlers from Europe arrived, Austin became a haven for outlaws, gunslingers, and desperados, fueled by a shoot-first-ask-questions-later mentality. The Wild West reputation of The Lone Star State added another layer of violence and chaos to the city’s history, attracting more than just the living and leaving behind a trail of blood and violence that could attract more than just earthly trouble.
But chaos, conflict, and senseless violence are not the only forces behind the City of Violet Crown’s disaster. A catastrophic dam failure in 1900 destroyed the bridge over the Colorado River, killing several dozen people. Many of those who died are said to still haunt the place where they met their untimely end, making it a top destination for curious tourists and locals looking to unearth the darkest secrets the Bat City desperately tries to hide.
From iconic landmarks with secrets as deep as the Guadalupe River to tales of terrifying hauntings that’ll make your hair stand on end, Austin is one of the most haunted places in the nation. The Greek Revival-style Texas Governor’s Mansion in Austin stands out thanks to its spooky residents. The restless spirit of a scorned lover is said to roam the halls of the historic Littlefield House across town, pining for their lost love.
Austin’s oldest public cemetery, Oakwood Cemetery, is teeming with restless souls, and maybe even a ghostly Confederate soldier or two still come out to patrol the grounds after dark. The historic Millett Opera House offers more than just drama on stage, with a series of inexplicable events that baffle even the most skeptical visitors.
Book a tour with Austin Ghosts to take a spooky stroll through streets charred with violence and bloody battles and hear terrifying stories of Austin’s dark past.
